A Non
Invasive Way To Detect Oregon Disease
The
Oregon Disease Inspection Wand is a device initially
developed in 2006 by Highland Innovation Centre for a
Major Poultry Processor to detect Oregon Disease in
turkeys, chickens and other poultry on their production line.
The
device can be used to detect the disease, which occurs
in the breast meat, without the need to cut open the
animal, allowing for non invasive testing on a
production line.

About
Oregon Disease
Oregon Disease,
relatively common in poultry, causes muscle to become
inelastic and prohibits the animal's muscles from
undertaking intense exertion. This, coupled with the
increased size of the pectoral muscle which occurs in
birds with the disease, can lead to occlusion of the
blood supply to the supracoracoideus, producing muscle
necrosis.
Oregon
Disease does not make it's presence obvious as live
birds show no apparent signs of pain or discomfort. In
its early stages may be seen as a unilateral or
bilateral swelling of the chest muscle and, in its later
stages as a dishing of one or both muscles.
Highland Innovation Centre offers an easy way to test
for the disease using their new poultry inspection wand
which allows the necrotic tissue caused by the disease
to be seen with the naked eye. Affected
muscle is rejected as unfit for
human consumption - making testing vital.
